April 29, 2006
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team swept Houston in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at George Ward Park. The Blazers defeated the Cougars, 6-4, in game one and run-ruled UH in game two, 8-0, in six innings. UAB snaps a nine-game losing streak to the Cougars and improves to 29-18 overall and 13-7 in the conference. Houston drops to 35-20 this year and 12-8 in C-USA.
"We played really well today and I'm very proud of the girls," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We manufactured runs and Kayla (Harris) had her best outing of the year. We are playing well at the right time. We need to come out tomorrow and play with the same intensity."
A five-run third inning sealed the victory for the Blazers in game one. UAB jumped on the Cougars pitching, batting around and collecting five hits. Junior Nicole Whitlock highlighted the inning with a two RBI double down the left field line.
The Cougars plated two runs in the fourth inning to cut into the Blazer lead. In the frame, UAB walked in a run and allowed a runner to score on a fielder's choice. Houston ended up scoring one in the fifth and sixth innings but it wasn't enough to overcome UAB.
UAB out-hit the Cougars in the game, 8-7, but only had five players' record hits. Whitlock led the way going 2-for-3 with two RBI and senior Chelsea McCall went 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
Sophomore Jennifer Nelson was the winning pitcher for the Blazers and improved to 14-7 overall. Nelson pitched her 15th complete game of the year and struck out four batters.
The Blazers dominated game two from the very beginning and never let up run-ruling the Cougars in six innings, 8-0. UAB opened the first inning with three consecutive singles and a hit-by-pitch to push across three runs.
Freshman Kayla Harris (10-5) pitched a phenomenal game for the Blazers. Harris was in control from the very beginning and never allowed a UH player to reach second base. The Whitby, Ontario native threw a complete game two-hit shutout against the Cougars. She went six innings striking out four and only walking one.
UAB added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-0 lead. It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Blazers reached the run-rule limit. In the sixth inning, sophomore Leigh Walker led off with a doubled to right field. Antonovich singled and advanced to second on the throw home to keep Walker at third.
Harris followed with an RBI bunt single that scored Walker. Freshman Jacy Leon hit a sacrifice fly to plate a run and Harris scored the game-ending run a single up the middle by McCall.
UAB and UH will conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at George Ward Park. Sunday will also be Senior Day for the Blazers with the ceremonies taking place before the game. For complete coverage of UAB athletics visit www.uabsports.com.
