NORMAN, Okla. – The UAB softball team (29-23) battled with No. 17 Oklahoma for the full seven innings on Sunday at Marita Hynes Field, but dropped the series finale by a 6-4 score to close this season’s non-conference action.
UAB scored single runs in the first and second and two in the fourth, as the Sooners broke through for a four-run second and added single runs in the fourth and sixth, to top the Blazers.
Hayley Davis led the way for UAB at the plate, finishing 1-for-2 with three RBI, including a two-run home run. Ashley Johnson was 2-for-3, while seven other Blazers added single hits. Heather Pearson picked up UAB’s other RBI, a double in the first.
Leigh Streetman got the start for UAB and tossed 4.1 innings of work, allowing five runs on seven hits. She walked nine, a season-high for UAB, and struck out four. Lannah Campbell entered in relief and tossed 1.2 innings and allowed three hits. The loss comes as UAB’s 14th contest against a top-25 opponent this season entering next weekend’s regular-season finale at UTSA.
The Blazers will travel to San Antonio for the three-game set, which begins next Saturday in a crucial Conference USA series, as UAB controls its own destiny as the current second-place team in the league.
No. 17 Oklahoma 6, UAB 4
For the second time against the Sooners, UAB struck first in the first with a single run. Danii Fernandez tallied UAB’s first hit on an infield single to second base and Megan McGrath hit a shot to left-center for a single to put two on with two out. Heather Pearson then broke through with an RBI-double off the wall in left-center to score Fernandez and give UAB a 1-0 advantage.
UAB struck again in the second with a run off two hits. Amy Dennis got things going with a hard single through to left and Ashley Johnson then singled hard to left-center, but was tagged out at second trying to stretch into a double. Davis then laid down a bunt to the pitcher to score Dennis and make the score 2-0.
The Sooners rallied for a four-run second inning on three hits and a Blazer error. Leslie Miller was walked to begin the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Oklahoma’s nine-hole hitter then singled into center to score Miller, and moved to third after Amy Waters mishandled it off the bounce. Lauren Chamberlain then drew a walk and moved to second on a stolen base as Kady Self then singled to plate a run and moved to second on a throw in to home. Shelby Pendley was then intentionally walked, before Georgia Casey delivered an infield, RBI-single to make the score 4-2 headed to the third.
The Blazers responded in the fourth on two hits to tie the game at 4-4. After Warren singled to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Hayley Davis lifted a two-out, two-run home run to left, her third of the year, to tie the game at 4-4 midway through the fourth.
The Sooners clawed back in the fourth on three hits, including an RBI-single to right from Brittany Williams to push Oklahoma back to a 5-4 advantage through four innings.
Oklahoma threatened again in the fifth to load the bases, but Attfield turned a double play on a line drive after Lannah Campbell entered in relief to get out of the jam and keep the score at 5-4 heading to the sixth.
Oklahoma added a run in the sixth on a tough play in the infield to score the Sooners’ sixth run of the contest and take a 6-4 lead, in what would be the final score of the series finale.
