NORMAN, Okla. – The UAB softball team (29-22) dropped a doubleheader to No. 17 Oklahoma, 11-3 and 8-4 on Saturday at Marita Hynes Field.
Caitlin Attfield finished 2-for-3 in game one with a run scored. Ashley Johnson had one of UAB’s RBIs, while Kristen McGrath finished with one of her own, a solo home run in the fourth. Lannah Campbell was tagged with the loss after throwing three innings, allowing 11 earned runs on 12 hits. Madison Hir entered in relief and got out of a jam with two walks allowed to prevent any Sooner hits in her fourth appearance of the season.
UAB totaled six hits and four RBI in game two, led by Attfield, Kristen and Megan McGrath and Johnson who all each had an RBI. Leigh Streetman got the start in game two of the twin-bill and allowed six earned runs on eight hits and allowed seven walks while striking out five.
The series will conclude at 12 p.m. on Sunday from Marita Hynes Field.
No. 17 Oklahoma 11, UAB 3 – (Game One)
The Blazers struck first in the first, plating a single run on three Oklahoma errors, the fourth-best fielding team in the nation. The inning began with a single up the middle from Attfield on an 0-2 count and Fernandez followed with a sacrifice bunt to third, when she fired a bad throw to second on a fielder’s choice to make all runners safe with nobody out. Kristen McGrath followed to plate UAB’s first run with a hit into center when the centerfielder dropped a line drive on the run to plate Attfield from second. The Sooners’ third error of the inning came on a dropped foul ball, as UAB left two on in the first.
The Sooners responded in the second on three hits to plate two runs and take a 2-1 advantage. Destinee Martinez singled in the infield to short, and after a fly to left for the second out, Oklahoma drew a walk and back-to-back hits, including a two-RBI double from Lauren Chamberlain to give Oklahoma the 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
The Sooners broke through in the second to plate seven runs on six hits. Oklahoma began with a single and a walk, and after a fly out for the first out of the frame, the Sooners got three-straight singles, then a walk before the second out was made. Oklahoma would add two more hits, including a three-RBI double to right center to close the inning and take a 9-1 advantage to the third.
UAB responded back in the third with a single run to cut the Oklahoma advantage to 9-2. Kristen McGrath was hit by a pitch to leadoff, and following back-to-back putouts, Warren and Dennis both reached. Ashley Johnson then followed with an RBI single to shallow left to make the score 9-2 midway through the third.
Oklahoma added two more un the third on a two-run home run from Brittany Williams to make the score 11-2 entering the fourth frame.
UAB put a run up in the fourth on a long home run from Kristen McGrath to left field to make the score 11-3, in what would be the final tally in game one.
No. 17 Oklahoma 8, UAB 4 – (Game Two)
UAB struck first again in game two, plating two runs in the second. Pearson drew a walk, her 32nd of the year to leadoff, and moved to second after Warren laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pearson then went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice ball from Johnson that was bobbled at home plate on an errant throw by the Oklahoma pitcher. Attfield gave UAB its second run of the inning on an RBI-single to center to plate Johnson.
Oklahoma answered in its half of the second on an infield hit, RBI-single from Martinez, and scored four on a triple from Pendley to clear the bases before she moved home after Dennis’ throw in from left-center was off the mark and out of play to make the score 5-2 at the end of the second.
The Sooners added three more in the fourth on two hits. Erin Miller led off with a single to short and Chamberlain drew a walk, before Streetman got the lead runner out at third on a fielder’s choice from Martinez. Pendley then tripled, her second of the game, before Williams drew a walk and Georgia Casey hit a sacrifice fly to left to cap the inning and extend the lead to 8-2.
UAB didn’t go down without a fight, plating two runs in the seventh. Johnson led off with a single into right and Davis drew a walk to put two on. Attfield then loaded the bases after reaching on a fielder’s choice at second. Following a strikeout, Kristen McGrath delivered a fielder’s choice to short to plate a run, before her sister, Megan, sent a single through to center to give UAB its second run of the frame and end game two of the doubleheader, 8-4.
