BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB and Charlotte played six scoreless innings with just four combined hits through six frames, but Charlotte’s solo home run in the seventh proved to the game winner as the Blazers (29-20, 13-7 C-USA) fell to the 49ers, 1-0, on Saturday at the UAB Softball Field.
UAB got a leadoff double in the sixth from Kristen McGrath, but couldn’t bring her home as Charlotte won the game on one pitch in the seventh with a solo shot to right field.
Senior Leigh Streetman threw six innings in her home finale and allowed just two hits and the one earned run while striking out eight. Senior Lannah Campbell tossed the final inning of the contest and struck out in in her final appearance at the UAB Softball Field.
Kristen McGrath, Heather Pearson and Amy Dennis all finished with a hit on the day. UAB’s 2014 seniors were recognized following Saturday’s contest – a group that has multiple accomplishments to its credit, including three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the defending 2013 Conference USA Regular Season Champions, champions of the NCAA Louisville Regional and the program’s first-ever appearance in a Super Regional a season ago.
With just six games in the regular season remaining, UAB will turn its attention to next weekend when the Blazers travel to Norman, Okla., to face the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners.
“This game by no means takes away from where we’re at this point in the season and what our goals are.”
Charlotte 1, UAB 0
Charlotte and UAB played to a 0-0 tie through six innings, as the pitchers allowed just a combined four hits up to that point.
Charlotte delivered the game-winning run in the top half of the seventh when Jessica Plemmons led off with a home run to right field, which was just one of two hits on the day for Charlotte.
