Millsaps’ Walk-Off Lifts UAB Past Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With no outs and two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, Madison Millsaps stepped to the plate and sent a walk-off single to left-center to score Katelyn Prater and take the, 4-3, win against Samford Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field.

UAB (16-27) was the first on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Destini England singled through the right side and scored Natalie Erwin and Amy Waters.

Danii Fernandez was next to the plate and singled to left field to score the speedy England from second to take the 3-0 lead.

Samford (19-28) didn’t score until the top of the fifth inning when Whitney Hinton sent a solo-shot over the left field wall to make the score 3-1.

The Bulldogs tied the game at three in the top of the sixth inning when Madison Couch singled to center field and plated Lexie Higgins and Rebecca Leonard.

The final run of the game came off the bat of Millsaps when she sent a deep single to the left-center gap to score Prater.

UAB outhit Samford 12-9. Fernandez led the offense charge by going 4-for-4 on the night while six other Blazers tallied hits.

Cara Goodwin (4-11) celebrated the win in the circle for the Blazers. She gave up only one earned run and recorded five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

Jessica Stone (8-6) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs. She tossed the complete game, gave up four runs on 12 hits and only walked one batter.

The Blazers will be back on the diamond Thursday night as they welcome No. 9 Washington to Mary Bowers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
