BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB sophomore Jennifer Nelson threw a six inning perfect game to highlight the Blazers doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M Tuesday night at George Ward Park. In game one, the Blazers run-ruled the Bulldogs, 8-0, in six innings and shutout AAMU in the nightcap, 5-0. UAB moved to 27-18 on the year while the Bulldogs dropped to 13-33 overall.

UAB dominated game one from the very beginning. Junior Lindsay Stanley led off the game with the first of her three bunt singles. Stanley proceeded to steal second base and scored on an RBI double by senior Chelsea McCall. Sophomore Leigh Walker came through with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to score McCall and give UAB the early lead.

The Blazers added a run in the second and fourth innings to take a commanding, 4-0 lead after four. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that UAB reached the run-rule limit. In the sixth, junior Allison Davis led off with a double down the left field line that was followed with consecutive bunt singles by Stanley and McCall. All three managed to score in the inning. Freshman Megan Terry reached on a bunt single that was followed by a Nicole Whitlock double. Terry was the winning run after she scored on a wild pitch.

Nelson (13-8) struck out 14 batters on her way to a perfect game. It was her second perfect game against Alabama A&M in her career and the first perfect game thrown by UAB this season.

Offensively, McCall went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Stanley was 3-for-4 with two runs. In the game, UAB collected 12 hits and scored eight runs.

UAB wasted little time taking an early lead in game two. The Blazers plated two runs in the first and a run in the second to jump ahead. In the first inning sophomore Holly Krzan hit an RBI double to left field and freshman Andrea Rogers singled through the left side of the infield to score a run. AAMU walked McCall in the second inning with the bases loaded to score the only run in the inning.

Junior Brittany Hodge made her 15 appearance of the year and was in complete control. Hodge pitched a seven inning complete game shutout against AAMU and improved to 2-3 overall. She only allowed three hits in the game while striking out two.

The Blazers added a run in the fourth and sixth innings to hold on to a 5-0 victory.

McCall led UAB at the plate in game two going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run. Walker was 2-for-3 in game two and played both shortstop and second base. Freshman Shannon Scull was also 1-for-1 with a run scored in game two. In the doubleheader, UAB out-hit AAMU 19-to-3 and scored 13 runs.

UAB will take the weekend off before hosting Houston next weekend in a key Conference USA series. For complete coverage of UAB softball visit the official athletic website at www.uabsports.com.
