HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- Holly Krzan homered and Jennifer Nelson became UAB's single-season strikeout queen, but Southern Miss rallied to win Sunday's Conference USA softball rubber match, 4-3. The win moved the Golden Eagles to 24-27 overall and 10-5 in Conference USA. UAB fell to 25-18 and 11-7 in league play.
Krzan's two-run blast in the first was her sixth of the season and gave the Blazers an early lead. UAB and Southern Miss split Saturday's doubleheader and the Blazers had control of the series-deciding contest.
Southern Miss tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. Allison Bullard led off the inning and was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a RBI single by Kristin Pilgrim. With two outs in the frame, Charity Butler tripled down the right field line, scoring Pilgrim.
The Lady Eagles took the first lead of the game in the third when Jennifer Fox was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single through the right side by Bullard to make the score 3-2.
UAB responded with a run in the top of the fourth, as Amanda Antonovich walked to start the inning. Allison Davis then tripled to center, scoring pinch runner Megan Terry, to knot the game at three.
Fox proved decisive for Southern Miss in the fourth inning, driving a single to left to drive in Jessica Huerta for the game-winning run. UAB pushed Southern Miss late as Lady Eagle starter Lacey Gros escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and forced the Blazers to strand two more in the sixth inning.
Gros (13-12) got the win for Southern Miss, tossing her 16th complete game of the season, allowing seven hits, three runs and seven walks while striking out a career-high 11.
Jennifer Nelson (12-8) took the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs, walking three and striking out five. The five K's give her 172 for the season - a new UAB record.
