Ashley Johnson lifted the first home run of her career on Saturday as UAB split a doubleheader with Southern Miss.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB softball team (24-19, 10-6 C-USA) split its doubleheader at Southern Miss on Saturday, with a 3-1 loss in game one and a 2-0 shutout in game two.
The Golden Eagles snapped UAB's 11-game win streak in the series in game one, but fought back in game two to even the series back at 24-24 all time.
Leigh Streetman tossed her fifth shutout of the season and 20th of her career in her 14th complete game of 2014 and 46th of her career, as the Blazers got timely hitting and executed on a Southern Miss defensive mishap to seal the 2-0 win in UAB’s eighth shutout of the year. The performance in the circle for Streetman was the second time this season she has allowed just one hit – last time in 3-0 home win over Western Kentucky.
With the split UAB moves to 24-19 overall and 10-6 in league play – the eighth 10-win season for UAB in program history.
Ashley Johnson and Kristen McGrath both finished the day 2-for-5 (.400). Johnson launched the first home run of her career in the seventh inning of game two to finish with an RBI, while Megan McGrath and Mary Warren had UAB’s other two RBI on the day. Amy Dennis, Warren and Caitlin Attfield each added two hits. With Johnson’s home run, UAB has now hit a home run of 25-of-43 games thus far this season.
Lannah Campbell was tagged with the loss in game one after tossing a complete game. She allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out eight. Streetman moved to 15-10 on the season after picking up the win in the circle in game two.
UAB and Southern Miss will face-off in the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Southern Miss 3, UAB 1 (Game One)
UAB scored in the first inning for the 16th time this season to take a 1-0 early advantage over Southern Miss. Danii Fernandez got things started with a single into left as Kristen McGrath followed with a hard single into left to put two Blazers on. Following a strikeout by Mary Warren, Heather Pearson and Megan McGrath both drew walks to plate UAB’s first run of the contest.
Southern Miss responded in the third with a run on three hits. The inning’s leadoff hitter singled into left and after a strikeout from Campbell for the first out, Michelle Stringer got an infield single to put two on. Campbell worked a big strikeout for the second out, but Morgan McKeever singled into center to plate the Golden Eagles’ first run of the contest to tie the game at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles scored two more in their next chance at the plate on two hits and a UAB error. The inning began with a leadoff walk for Southern Miss and continued on the third hitter of the frame when Arielle Pollock reached on an error to push the leadoff hitter to third. Southern Miss then followed with a single into right to plate the second run, but Hayley Davis gunned down the second runner trying to score for the second out. The Golden Eagles took the 3-1 lead on a double to right-center to end the frame in what would be the final score of game one of the doubleheader.
UAB 2, Southern Miss 0 (Game Two)
UAB broke through in the sixth via timely hitting and a defensive mishap from Southern Miss. Attfield singled up the middle and after a tough-luck double play on a lineout by Fernandez, Kristen McGrath singled to right. Southern Miss’ right-fielder misplayed the ball as it rolled to the fence to push McGrath to third. Anna Theriot entered to run at third and Mary Warren followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate the first run of the contest and put UAB up, 1-0.
The Blazers added an insurance run in the seventh via the first home run of the day. With two away in the frame, Ashley Johnson launched the first home run of her career, a deep drive to left field to give UAB a 2-0 advantage in what would be the final score of game two.
