BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team (23-18) dropped a 3-2 game in eight innings to in-state foe Troy Thursday night at the UAB Softball Field.
The Trojans plated two early runs in the first, but went hitless up until the eighth inning when they broke through for a double to plate the game-winning run and seal the 3-2 victory.
After giving up the two runs on three hits in the first, Leigh Streetman shutdown the Trojans, allowing just four hits and three earned runs in the game. She walked just one and struck out six and was tagged with the loss. Lannah Campbell entered in relief to get the final out of the eighth and allowed one hit – the double to left-center.
Ashley Rainey got the win in the circle for Troy after tossing three innings with just two hits allowed. Amanda Winters had two RBI to lead the Trojan offense.
UAB will be back in action this weekend as the Blazers step back into Conference USA play with a three-game set at Southern Miss.
Troy 3, UAB 2 (8)
Troy opened up scoring in the first inning with two runs, the only runs they’d score up until the eighth. Following a single and a walk, Troy got a bunt single back to Streetman in the circle to load the bases with one out. The Trojans followed with a single to right field to plate the two runs in the inning and go up early on UAB, 2-0.
UAB tied the game in the fifth on clutch hitting from senior Kristen McGrath. Following a leadoff double from Attfield, McGrath singled into left-center for an RBI, which tied the game at 2-2.
The Blazers had their chance in the seventh inning to secure the walk-off win, but left the bases loaded to send the game to extras – UAB’s 10th of the season.
Troy took advantage of its first opportunity in the extra frame, scoring the go-ahead run on a double to left-center field that gave Troy its third run to secure the 3-2 victory.
