TULSA, Okla. - After building a 2-1 lead in the first game and a 2-0 lead in the second game, the UAB softball team fell to Tulsa here on Friday afternoon. The Golden Hurricane was able to come from behind and win, 4-2 and 3-2, respectively.
With the two losses, UAB falls to 12-26 overall and 4-13 in Conference USA. Tulsa improves to 25-14 on the year and 9-4 in league play.
In the first game of day, Tulsa was able to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning off two hits. Lauren Lindey reached base on a double through the left side and Lauren Menke hit a RBI single up the middle.
In the third inning, the Blazers were able to load the bases after Caley Walden doubled and Catherine Douglass and Amanda Allen drew back-to-back walks. Laura Callaway was able to hit a fly ball that dropped into right field scoring Walden to tie the game, 1-1.
The Golden Hurricane was able to load the bases in fourth inning on three hits. With one out, the Blazers were able to make a forced out at the plate and Skylar Swanson popped up to shallow left field to end the inning before any runs could cross the plate.
UAB took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning after Laura Callaway hit a ground ball to left field. Callway was able to advance to second on a throwing error and eventually score on another throwing error by Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane came right back in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2, with a solo home run by Christian Timmons. Tulsa proceeded to score two more runs in the inning after a bases-loaded wild pitch and an infield ground ball for the 4-2 victory.
In the second game, things were slow through the first two innings until a Douglass's single up the middle scored Landrum in the third inning. Allen followed up with a single to left field and Walden was able to score for a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Tulsa cut the lead in half, 2-1, when Stephanie Chomicki hit foul out to right field and Brooke Smart was able to score from third.
The Golden Hurricane's Vanessa Vice hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, Lindsay reached first with a single to right field. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly Chapman. Kailey Yarmer the belted a single to centerfield allowing Lindsay to score the winning run, 3-2.
Lindsey Croft (6-14) pitched 6.1 innings in the loss, allowing eight hits and struck out two.
UAB and Tulsa will conclude the three-game series with a single contest tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. CT.
