RIDGELAND, Miss.--The UAB softball team dropped a close game on Wednesday night, 3-2, to Mississippi State at Freedom Ridge Park.

Senior Chandler Orr and sophomore Amy Dennis hit home runs as UAB falls to 24-8 on the year, while Mississippi State improves to 23-12.

"We answered back after they led off with the home run," head coach Marla Townsend said, "I felt like we made great adjustments toward the end, the last seven of eight batters, we just lost our focus at the plate."

The Bulldogs got on the board first, as catcher Sam Lenahan hit a solo home run to center field to lead off the bottom of the frame.

Both sides went without a run for three full innings before Orr hit her own solo homer, her third of the year, over the left field fence in the top of the fifth.

After a flyout and a pop up in foul territory, Dennis stepped up to the plate and launched her first home run of the year over center field to give UAB a 2-1 edge.

Mississippi State responded in the bottom of the fifth as Jessica Cooley hit a two-run homer to put the Bulldogs up, 3-2.

UAB turned a double play in the bottom of the sixth to stave off another Bulldog run, but struck out each at-bat of the top of the seventh to end the game.

"We generally take pride in answering back after somebody gets a couple runs on us, but we didn't make those adjustments," Townsend said. "It hurts to lose this one, but I think it's going to light a fire and make us even better when we learn from the mistakes we made tonight."

In the circle, senior Lauren Webster started the game and struck out 11 batters in 4.1 innings. Junior Lannah Campbell (7-2) was credited with the loss as she pitched 1.2 innings and picked up a pair of strikeouts.

For Mississippi State, Alison Owen was credited with the win as she threw 2.1 innings and struck out seven Blazer batters.

Up next, UAB will make the trek to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on Alabama on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT.
