Whitney Fletcher hit a walk-off RBI triple in game two of the Lipscomb doubleheader to give the Blazers a 1-0 win and sweep of the Bisons on Tuesday at the UAB Softball Field.
UAB won the first game, 8-1 as Fletcher went 3-4 at the plate and posted a two-RBI home run, her third of the year, in the bottom of the sixth inning. On the day, the Decatur, Ala., native was responsible for six of UAB's nine RBI.
"Whitney (Fletcher) had six RBI on the day, and not only that, but she battled," head coach Marla Townsend said. "She is seeing the ball extremely well right now and you could tell. Lipscomb threw around her a couple times, but she was definitely feeling it and in her zone."
UAB improves to 24-7 on the year while Lipscomb falls to 17-18.
"Lipscomb is a great team," Townsend said. "They're very talented and we've always had good, close games with them. I'm proud of the girls for being able put the ball in play and take advantage of their mistakes. In the second game, they had solid defense and were playing tight. We kept getting hits, but couldn't string them together, leaving nine on base. When it counted though, Whitney came up and did what we needed her to do."
Game 1 UAB 8, Lipscomb 1
The Blazers picked up their first run of the game in the bottom of the opening frame, as Fletcher ripped an RBI double through the Lipscomb shortstop's legs, scoring sophomore Heather Pearson from first base.
Lipscomb scored its lone run of the game in the top of the second as center fielder Bree Thurman singled to right field to score pinch runner Madison Wray from third base.
UAB went on to post five runs in the bottom of the frame, starting when sophomore third baseman Amy Dennis hit a flyout to left field that was dropped, allowing her to reach first base on the error and for freshman pinch runner Kelly Britt to score from second base, with sophomore left fielder Hayley Davis advancing to third base.
Next at bat, freshman Caitlin Attfield dropped a bunt and was advanced to second base on an error by Lipscomb first baseman Paige Neely, which drove in another run and put UAB up, 3-1.
Pearson walked on the next at-bat, and Fletcher roped another single to short to score two more runs. Junior designated hitter Kristen McGrath followed with a groundout to second base, which allowed Pearson to score for the final run of the inning and give the Blazers a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Pearson was walked for the second time that game for Fletcher, who homered over the left field fence for the final score of 8-1.
In the circle, junior Lannah Campbell (8-1) threw the first four innings and struck out three batters before senior Lauren Webster entered in the top of the fifth. Webster added seven more strikeouts to UAB's total of 10 and picked up her second save of the year.
Game 2 UAB 1, Lipscomb 0
In the second game, junior pitcher Leigh Streetman (9-4) pitched her fifth complete game of the year and her third consecutive shutout as she struck out 11 batters and only allowed one hit.
Streetman pitched herself out of a jam in the top of the seventh frame as Lipscomb got a pair of runners on via a walk and a hit-by-pitch with one out. The junior from Hueytown, Ala., struck out the next two batters to keep the game without a score.
In the bottom of the final frame, the top of the Blazer order, Attfield, flied out to center field before Pearson drew her second walk of the game.
With a 2-1 count, Fletcher roped a walk-off triple to deep right center, scoring Pearson from first base to give UAB the 1-0 win.
Up next, UAB travels to Ridgeland, Miss., on Wednesday for a rematch with Mississippi State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT. Follow @UABSoftball on Twitter for in-game updates.
