DENTON, Texas – Lannah Campbell provided another dominant pitching performance in the circle for UAB, as the Blazers (20-14, 8-4 C-USA) took down North Texas, 2-1, on Sunday to complete the sweep over the Mean Green (22-13, 8-4 C-USA).
“I’m extremely proud of our play this series,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “I felt like we had every area of the game working. The pitching staff did an excellent job of holding an outstanding hitting team to three runs and our defense also did an outstanding job. Lannah (Campbell) threw 14 innings and was outstanding; we were working on all cylinders.”
The Conference USA sweep for UAB is the first since April 21, 2013 when the Blazers took three from UTEP. The series win marks the third-straight for UAB dating back to home series’ with Florida Atlantic and FIU.
Campbell (6-6) went 6.2 innings in the circle and allowed just one earned run, a home run, and six hits while striking out two – her second-straight start (in back-to-back days) in which she’s only allowed one run. Leigh Streetman entered with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and two North Texas runners on to seal the deal and pick up her first save of the season.
Caitlin Attfield provided UAB’s first spark of the day, a towering home run to right field that put UAB on the board first. She finished with two hits and an RBI. Ashley Johnson provided the Blazers’ other RBI on a squeeze bunt in the fifth that scored Heather Pearson. Danii Fernandez and Megan McGrath each had a hit for UAB.
UAB outscored the Mean Green 16-3 over the three-game set and have now won eight of its last 10 games.
The Blazers will be back in action on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup with Jacksonville State at 6 p.m. at the UAB Softball Field.
UAB 2, North Texas 1
UAB and North Texas played three scoreless innings as the Mean Green picked up single hits in the first, second and third, but UAB struck first in the run column in the fourth. Caitlin Attfield led off the inning and launched a high home run to right field, just inside the foul pole, to give UAB a 1-0 advantage midway through the fourth.
North Texas responded in its half of the fourth on a solo shot to tie the contest at 1-1. Jordan Terry hit a deep line drive that snuck over the wall in center to even the score in the fourth, 1-1.
The Blazers fired right back to retake the lead in the fifth thanks to fundamental work from Ashley Johnson. Heather Pearson led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a single to right-center from Megan McGrath. Following a strikeout from Amy Waters for the first out of the frame, Johnson laid down a bunt between the pitcher and first to score Pearson from third and give UAB a 2-1 advantage.
North Texas had runners at first and second with two outs in the seventh, but Leigh Streetman entered in relief and fought back from being down 3-0 to draw a full count swinging strikeout that hit the Mean Green hitter to end the game.
