DENTON, Texas – Lannah Campbell and Leigh Streetman both threw complete games in the circle for UAB, as the Blazers (19-14, 7-4 C-USA) outscored North Texas, 14-2, to sweep the Mean Green on Saturday at Lovelace Stadium, 9-1 and 5-1.
Streetman and Campbell combined to shut down the NCAA’s 24th-ranked offense and top Conference USA offense, who was averaging 6.28 runs per game, to limit the Mean Green to just two runs over 13 innings and move to 7-4 in league play.
Heather Pearson led the way with four RBI on the day, totaling four hits in seven at-bats and a home run. Kristen McGrath finished with three RBI on three hits, while Hayley Davis added the Blazers’ other home run to total two RBI in the doubleheader. Danii Fernandez finished with two RBI, while Caitlin Attfield and Ashley Johnson each had one.
Streetman threw a six-inning complete game in game one and allowed just one earned run on five hits and struck out seven. Campbell went the full seven innings in game two and also struck out seven, allowing one run on five hits to move to 5-6 on the season.
UAB will go for the sweep on Sunday at 12 p.m. in the series finale.
UAB 9, North Texas 1 (Game One – Six Innings)
UAB struck first in the first inning and took a patient approach to the plate as North Texas’ Ashley Kirk walked two Blazer hitters and worked four three-pitch counts. Following walks from Danii Fernandez and Mary Warren, Heather Pearson lifted her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left to give the Blazers an early 3-0 advantage.
North Texas loaded the bases in the second, but Streetman worked out of the jam to allow just one Mean Green run in the frame. Jordan Terry walked and Kat Strunk followed with a hit just past Fernandez at third to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Taylor Schoblocher then walked to load the bases to allow Jackie Miller to put the Mean Green on the board after a sacrifice fly to left. Strunk was caught stealing at third for the second out and Streetman followed with a three-pitch strikeout to end the frame.
UAB added two more runs in the third after two hits. Following a hard single from Fernandez over the head of the third baseman to lead off, Hayley Davis launched a two-run shot to left-center, her first long ball of the season, to increase the lead to 5-1.
The Blazers added two more in the fifth via a two-out rally and a throwing error by North Texas to keep the inning alive. Amy Dennis reached first on a throwing error by the second baseman and scored on Attfield’s double. Fernandez followed with her second single of the day to score Attfield and extend the UAB lead to 7-1.
UAB tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth on a two-RBI double from Kristen McGrath to give UAB the 9-1 lead and run-rule the Mean Green, 9-1 in six innings.
UAB 5, North Texas 1 (Game Two)
The Blazers struck first in game two of the doubleheader, scoring a single run in the second. Following singles from Pearson and Megan McGrath, Amy Waters advanced to first via a hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Johnson stood in and delivered an RBI single to left to plate Pearson and give UAB an early 1-0 advantage.
UAB scored a single run again in the third after leadoff hits from both Fernandez and Kristen McGrath. With Fernandez at third and McGrath at second, Pearson hit a sacrifice fly to the corner in left to plate UAB’s second run of the game and make the score 2-0.
UAB again scored a single run in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0. Dennis led off with a double and Attfield followed with a bunt single to put two Blazers on. Fernandez walked after Attfield was caught stealing at second and Dennis came home to score on an RBI groundout to second from Kristen McGrath to give UAB a 3-0 advantage.
North Texas scored its first run of the contest in the fourth off a two-out RBI single from Jordan Terry and cut the Blazers’ lead to 3-1.
The Blazers would respond back in the fifth with another single run. Pearson led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball, and following two putouts, she scored on a throwing error from the Mean Green third baseman to make the score 4-1. Dennis wouldn’t go down quietly as she doubled to right-center, but Johnson was gunned down at home trying to score to cap the frame.
UAB tacked on an insurance run in the final frame after three hits. With the bases loaded and two away, Fernandez sent a hard line drive up the middle to give UAB its fifth run of the game to cap the scoring.
