EUGENE, Ore. --- The UAB Softball team was swept Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader by Oregon in Eugene at Howe Field. The Blazers led for most of game one but dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in eight innings. Oregon took the lead early in game two and held on for a 4-1 victory. The Blazers fell to 18-12 overall, while the Ducks improved to 17-10.
"We had opportunities today against a very good Oregon team but we didn't capitalize on their mistakes," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We were close in both games but couldn't get the hits when we needed them. Offensively, we need someone to step up. We look to come out and battle tomorrow against Oregon State."
Oregon scored first in the second inning of game one. Kayleen Hudson led off the inning with an infield single and later came around to score. The Ducks took a 1-0 advantage into the third inning.
UAB took advantage of three Oregon errors and scored two unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. The Blazers had one hit by Lindsay Stanley in the inning but managed to load the bases with one out. Stanley led UAB at the plate collecting the only two hits and going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Ducks tied the game in the fourth inning on a lead off solo home run by Lovena Chaput. Chaput's shot ended up being the run that forced extra innings. Oregon came through in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win. With the international tie breaker rule in effect, Oregon placed Sari-Jane Jenkins on second and quickly sacrificed her to third. Hudson came through with a game-winning RBI single to third to score Jenkins for the win.
Sophomore Jennifer Nelson takes the loss and falls to 8-4 overall. Nelson allowed three runs on six hits over 7.1 innings.
Oregon was led by Hudson, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Amy Harris got the win after throwing five innings. Harris moved to 8-4 on the season.
The Ducks offense came alive in the first inning of game two. Oregon scored three runs in the inning on two hits and an error. UO held a 3-0 lead until added another run in the third inning.
The Blazers collected at least a hit in the first four innings but could not push across a run. UAB scattered six hits throughout the game but it wasn't until the seventh inning that they final scored. In the final inning, Leigh Walker lined a double to left center field and later came around to score on a Jacy Leon single up the middle.
Senior Chelsea McCall and sophomore Amanda Antonovich both had two hits in three trips to the plate. UAB out-hit UO in game two, 6-5.
Freshman Kayle Harris allowed four runs on five hits and took the loss. Harris pitched 4.1 innings and fell to 6-4 this year. Antonovich came on in the relief to pitch the final 1.2 innings.
The Blazers will return to action Wednesday against No. 8 Oregon State in Corvallis. UAB and OSU will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. PT. For complete coverage of UAB athletics visit www.uabsports.com.
