Marshall Sweeps UAB Softball in Doubleheader

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. --- The UAB softball team was swept Saturday by Marshall in a doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field. The Blazers were shutout in both games losing game one, 6-0 and game two, 4-0. Marshall swept the three-game series and improved to 7-2 in conference action. UAB fell to 18-10 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA.

Marshall broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back to defeat UAB in game one. The Herd was led by Rachel Folden and Samantha Rodriguez, who both went 2-for-3 in the game.

Rodriguez scored the first run of the game in the second inning after leading off with an infield single. The Herd plated another run in the third inning on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, Marshall capitalized on a UAB fielding error and scored two unearned runs on a double and a single. The final two runs by MU came in the fifth inning on three hits.

UAB collected five hits in the game including two by freshman Jacy Leon.

The greatest scoring opportunities for the Blazers came in the fourth and fifth innings but UAB could not plate a run.

Abigail Harter (7-7) got the win in the circle for Marshall. Harter shutout the Blazers for seven innings allowing five hits. UAB freshman Kayla Harris takes the loss and fell to 6-3 on the season.

Game two of the doubleheader was a pitcher's dual between UAB starter Jennifer Nelson and Marshall's Veronica Ralston.

The Blazers offensive came alive in the top of the second inning of game two. Junior Nicole Whitlock was hit by a pitch to reach safely and bring Leigh Walker to the plate. Walker drilled a double to left field put runners at second and third with two outs. Leon was intentionally walked to load the bases for Allison Davis. Davis slapped a shot to third but could not beat the throw stranding bases loaded.



UAB starter Jennifer Nelson cruised through the first two innings striking out three and getting two ground balls. In the third inning, Marshall had runners at second and third with two outs and Nelson slammed to door on the rally striking out pinch hitter Gina Guzzo.

The Blazers had another scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. Leon led off with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second by Lindsay Stanley. UAB called on freshman Megan Terry to run for Leon and proved to be a good decision. Terry took third base on a wild pitch to put the go ahead run 60 feet away. Senior Chelsea McCall tied to slap the ball up the middle but Ralston made a good play to retired the side.

Marshall sealed the victory in the sixth inning after scoring four runs on four hits. Seven different MU players recorded hits in the game. Ralston was the winning pitcher for Marshall and improved to 11-7 on the season.

Nelson takes the loss and fell to 8-3 on the year. In her 13th appearances this season, Nelson went six innings allowing four runs on seven hits.

UAB returns to action Tuesday and Wednesday with two mid-week doubleheaders in Oregon. The Blazers are scheduled to face Oregon in Eugene Tuesday starting at 2 p.m. CT and will battle Oregon State in Corvallis Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT. Complete coverage of UAB athletics can be found at
