BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team (17-14, 5-4 C-USA) dropped its Conference USA series finale to FIU, 8-4, on Sunday at the UAB Softball Field, but took the series, 2-1.
After the loss, UAB is now 8-2 in its last 10 games and will have five days off during spring break before returning to league action next weekend at North Texas.
UAB scored first with a single run in the second, but the Panthers of FIU fought back for a five-run third inning and added three more in the fifth to avoid the sweep and seal an 8-4 win.
Megan McGrath finished 3-for-4 on the day with a solo home run, her 11th long ball of the season, and one RBI. Heather Pearson, Caitlin Attfield and Mary Warren added the Blazers’ other three hits. Fernandez, Pearson and Amy Dennis all had an RBI each for UAB.
Leigh Streetman threw 2.2 innings in the circle and gave up five runs on three hits and struck out two. Lannah Campbell entered in relief and pitched the final 4.1 and allowed just one earned run on three hits and struck out six FIU hitters.
UAB will return to action on March 29 for a three-game Conference USA series at North Texas.
FIU 8, UAB 4
UAB struck first in the game, scoring a single run in the second inning off a solo shot from Megan McGrath to straightaway center field, her 11th long ball of the year.
UAB would answer in the fourth with a run on a bases loaded walk, but left the bags loaded to strand three runners in the frame.
FIU came right back in the fifth with three straight singles, one that scored a run. Gabby Spallone followed with a fielder’s choice on a play where Attfield attempted an out at home, but the ball rolled to the backstop to allow the run to score and all runners to advance. Stephanie Texeira would score the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to make the score 8-2.
The Blazers wouldn’t go down quietly in the seventh, plating two runs on three hits. Attfield led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error by the FIU right fielder. Danii Fernandez drove her in on an infield groundout before Mary Warren doubled to left-center. Heather Pearson put UAB’s fourth and final run on the board with a single down the left field line, to cap the scoring.
