BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team (17-13, 5-3 C-USA) topped the FIU Panthers (19-12, 2-3), 10-0 and 5-2 on Saturday at the UAB Softball Field to open the three-game Conference USA series and improve to 5-3 in league play.
In game one, senior Leigh Streetman tossed a complete game shutout in five innings to improve to 13-6 on the season. She struck out four, allowed just five hits and didn’t walk an FIU hitter through just 89 pitches to pick up the win for UAB in game one.
In game two, senior Lannah Campbell picked up her fourth win of the season in a complete game performance in just 74 pitches to move to 4-6 and allowed just two runs on three hits, while striking out eight.
Junior Heather Pearson batted .800 on the day with four hits including a double and a three-run home run. She totaled six RBI as UAB outscored FIU 15-2 on the day. Kristen McGrath finished with two home runs on the day, both shots to left field in the first inning, and finished with three RBI and four runs. Her twin sister, Megan, also had a home run of her own and totaled two hits. Danii Fernandez went 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBI and four runs scored while Amy Waters also added an RBI, her first of the season.
UAB will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
UAB 10, FIU 0 – Five Innings (Game One)
UAB took advantage of early opportunities and scored in the first inning for the 11th time this season. Caitlin Attfield led off the inning with a triple and Danii Fernandez followed with a single to drive her in.
Kristen McGrath followed with her eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to give UAB a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers struck again in the second with five additional runs off two home runs and a double. Following a single from Fernandez and a walk from Kristen McGrath, Amy Waters tacked on her first RBI of the season on a double to left-center. With two on, Heather Pearson lifted her third home run of the season to increase the UAB lead to 7-0. Megan McGrath followed with one of her own, a solo shot to dead center, to make the UAB lead, 8-0.
UAB tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth via a wild pitch that scored a run and a double from Pearson. Fernandez and Kristen McGrath both walked to begin the frame and Fernandez would come home on a wild pitch for UAB’s ninth run of the game. Pearson sent a two-out, RBI double to left to score the Blazers’ 10 run of the game to cap scoring in the five-inning affair.
UAB 5, FIU 2 (Game Two)
UAB again followed its performance in game one and 12th time this season to plate a run in the first on a solo shot from Kristen McGrath, her second long ball of the day.
The Blazers loaded the bases in both the second and fifth innings, but didn’t produce a run in either frame as FIU’s Corrine Jenkins worked out of both jams.
UAB tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth inning. Fernandez drove in two on a two-RBI single up the middle, followed by Pearson who singled to left to plate two more UAB runs.
FIU would add two runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Krys Garcia and a fielder’s choice RBI from Dani Mowry.
