BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Lannah Campbell tossed her fifth complete game of the season and Caitlin Attfield and Kristen McGrath both hit home runs, to lead the UAB softball team (15-13, 3-3) to a 5-2 defeat over Murray State on Thursday at the UAB Softball Field.
"We just finished up the first half of the season and momentum is on our side," head coach Marla Townsend said. "We like the way we’re playing; we can always obviously get better, but the midweek games are what’s preparing us for the weekend series’ and we’re looking forward to it.”
UAB used a five-run second inning to take an early 5-0 advantage and held strong through all seven to pick up its third-straight win and eighth in its last 10 games.
The Blazers were led by Attfield and Kristen McGrath, who both finished 3-for-3. Attfield totaled three RBI on the day and McGrath had two. Danii Fernandez, Megan McGrath and Ashley Johnson also each had a hit.
Senior Lannah Campbell picked up her first win since March 8, tossing her fifth complete game effort of the season and allowed six hits and two earned runs. She didn’t walk a Murray State batter and struck out seven to move to 3-6 on the year.

UAB hit two runs in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Megan McGrath led off the inning and advanced to first on a hit by pitch. JoJo Fallen successfully advanced Lauren Beshel, in to pinch run, to second. Ashley Johnson then walked and Amy Dennis advanced to first on a fielder’s choice to third.
With two on, Caitlin Attfield lifted her third home run of the season to right field to give UAB a 3-0 advantage. Danii Fernandez then followed with a single, before Kristen McGrath lined a shot to left field to increase the UAB lead to 5-0.
Murray State got on the board in the sixth via a two-run home run. Following a leadoff single, Alexa Becker sent a shot to left field to score two Racer runs, their only runs of the game, to cap the scoring for the midweek contest.
