Blount and Waters Carry Blazers in Win Over UTSA in Series Finale

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Claire Blount and Amy Waters both hit two home runs each to lift UAB past UTSA, 6-1, in the series finale Sunday at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, but UAB (10-17, 3-3) rattled off three runs on four hits to set the pace for the game in the second.

The scoring started when Blount sent her first career home run over the right center wall to take the early 1-0 lead.

Megan Smith was next to the plate and hit a hard single down the left field line before senior Amy Waters launched a two-run long ball over the right field wall to make the score 3-0 in the Blazers’ favor.

The runs didn’t end in the third inning. Blount stepped to the plate again and sent her second homer of the game over the center field wall.

Molli Garcia drew a walk next at bat before Waters sent one over the fence in dead center for her second of the game to make the score 6-0.

UTSA (11-17, 2-4) recorded its only run of the game in the sixth inning on an error by the Blazers to shrink the lead to 6-1.

Blount (5-5) got the win in the circle for the Blazers She tossed a complete game, recorded five strikeouts and only gave up one run.

Nicole Merrill (3-5) suffered the loss for the Roadrunners. She gave up three runs on four hits in only one inning of work.

UAB will be back on the diamond Tuesday as it travels to Troy, Ala., to take on the Trojans. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
