GREENVILLE, N.C. --- UAB sophomore Amanda Antonovich hit a game-winning, three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning of game one to highlight the Blazers sweep of East Carolina Saturday afternoon at the ECU softball field. UAB went on to win both games by a score of 3-1. With the victories, the Blazers are 17-7 overall and improve to 4-1 in conference action.
"Our confidence is just so high right now," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "In game one we had two runners on and two outs and Amanda (Antonovich) came through. It amazes me that every time it's a different player that comes through. It's big to be able to win a conference series on the road but we aren't content. We hope to come out tomorrow and put some more hits on the board."
Game one of the series was a pitcher's dual until the very end. UAB sophomore Jennifer Nelson led the way in the circle for the Blazers. Nelson pitched seven complete innings of three hit ball only allowing a run in the first inning.
The Pirates scored first in the opening inning on a bases loaded walk that scored Erin St. Ledger. ECU held on to a 1-0 lead until the seventh inning.
UAB rallied in the top of the seventh to seal the victory. Sophomore Holly Krzan and junior Nicole Whitlock both had singles in the inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Antonovich hit her first home run of the season over the left center field fence. Her three-run shot gave UAB a 3-1 advantage heading into the home half of the final frame.
Nelson shut down the Pirates in the seventh inning getting two ground outs to third base and a strikeout to finish the game. Nelson improved to 7-1 on the season while striking out five ECU batters.
UAB out-hit ECU in game one 4-3 and was led by Antonovich's three RBI. Krzan went 2-for-2 and Whitlock was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Junior Keli Harrell pitched a strong game for the Pirates throwing seven innings but fell to 10-7 on the season.
In game two, ECU jumped ahead with a run in the third inning. Jessica Johnson led off with a double down the left field line then later came around to score on a single by Vanessa Moreno.
The final run for UAB came in the sixth inning on sacrifice fly to right field by Rogers to score Lindsay Stanley from third.
Freshman Kayla Harris got the win after pitching a phenomenal game against the Pirates. Harris allowed a run and six hits while improving to 6-2 overall. Krzan, Rogers and Walker accounted for all the Blazers hits in game two.
UAB and ECU will conclude the weekend series Sunday with a single game starting at noon on the ECU softball field. For complete of UAB athletics visit www.uabsports.com.
