BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team (12-13, 2-3) split its Conference USA home opener against Florida Atlantic, 4-3 and 3-1 on Saturday at the UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers plated four runs early in the first inning of game one and got quality pitching from senior Leigh Streetman to pick up the win to begin the series. FAU fought back in game two and took a 3-1 decision as UAB played its ninth extra-inning game of the season.
Sophomore Caitlin Attfield finished 5-for-7 at the plate on the day with a double and a walk, including a 3-for-3 performance in game one. Mary Warren finished with a home run and four RBI, while Megan McGrath also had a long ball and one RBI.
Streetman tossed a complete game in game one to pick up the win in the circle and Lannah Campbell was tagged with a tough loss in game two after throwing nine innings, allowing two earned runs on 12 hits, striking out seven.
UAB and FAU will face-off in the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
UAB 4, Florida Atlantic 3 (Game One)
UAB took advantage of its first inning opportunity and scored four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. Attfield singled down the line in left to begin the inning and Kristen McGrath walked to put two on for Mary Warren. Warren drilled a shot deep to left field to plate three UAB runs and Megan McGrath followed with a solo shot of her own to plate UAB's four runs.
Senior Leigh Streetman tossed a complete game in the circle for UAB and allowed eight hits and two earned runs. She walked two and struck out five to pick up her 10th win of the season.
Florida Atlantic 3, UAB 1 (Game Two)
The Owls put up a single run in the second inning and a pair of runs in the ninth to seal the 3-1 win over UAB to tie the series at 1-1. FAU got on the board first in the second on an RBI single from Jordan Stovall to make the score 1-0.
UAB would answer in the fifth and picked up its lone run of the game when Mary Warren was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to even the score at 1-1.
Neither team would score through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to send the Blazers to their ninth extra-inning game of the season. The Owls picked up another RBI single from Stovall to make the score 2-1 and added an insurance run on a throwing error from Campbell in the circle to cap the scoring at 3-1.
