Senior Megan McGrath hit her second home run in three games on Tuesday to help UAB to a 3-0 win over Western Kentucky.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Leigh Streetman tossed her third solo shutout of the season and provided UAB (9-12, 1-2) its fifth shutout of an opponent this year as the Blazers blanked Western Kentucky (15-8-1), 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the UAB Softball Field.
Streetman allowed just one Lady Topper hit and struck out three in just 86 pitches to improve her record to 7-6 on the season. Her performance marked the least amount of hits allowed since April 2, 2013 when she allowed just one and struck out 11 in a 1-0 win over Lipscomb.
“I’m proud of Leigh and the way she really spun the ball today,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “She definitely was feeling it and went right at them. She only threw 86 pitches in seven innings, so I felt like she did a great job of getting out ahead and winning the first two out of three. She only produced four assists for only five ground balls, so she did a great job of creating fly balls. Our defense was solid behind her as well.”
Seniors Kristen and Megan McGrath continued their success at the plate each with solo home runs. Megan’s shot in the second inning was her second in three games and fifth of the season, while Kristen’s was also her fifth of the season and second in as many games.
Kristen finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI to extend her hit streak to eight games, while twin sister Megan was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Anna Theriot was a perfect 2-for-2 off the bench and added UAB’s third run on an RBI single to left in the fifth. Freshman Danii Fernandez also finished 2-for-3 and raised her season batting average to .364.
Western Kentucky’s Emily Rousseau was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings pitched.
The Blazers will have a quick turnaround and return to action on Wednesday in a doubleheader against Ball State that is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
UAB 3, Western Kentucky 0
UAB scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings, two off solo shots, and one off an RBI single. Megan McGrath put UAB up 1-0 in the second when she lifted a deep home run to left, her second home run in three games, to give UAB the early 1-0 advantage.
Western Kentucky picked up its lone hit of the day in the third when Brooke Holloway doubled down the line in left. She was stranded at second, as Streetman didn’t allow any more production from the Lady Toppers.
UAB picked back up in scoring in the bottom half of the third courtesy of another solo shot from Kristen McGrath, her second in as many games, to put the Blazers up 2-0.
UAB would add its final run in the fifth in a frame that saw six UAB hitters come to bat. Caitlin Attfield began the inning with a single and Heather Pearson advanced on a sacrifice bunt fielder’s choice that moved Attfield to second. Kristen McGrath followed with a groundout to the pitcher that moved the runners to second and third, before Anna Theriot picked up her fourth RBI of the year to plate UAB’s final run and cap the scoring.
