GREENVILLE, N.C. – The UAB softball team (8-12, 1-2) fell to East Carolina, 7-1, (13-5, 2-1) on Sunday at the ECU Softball Stadium to drop its Conference USA opener and wrap up its opening weekend of league play.
Senior Kristen McGrath replicated her performance in game one of the series with a home run to center in the first inning to give UAB an early 1-0 lead, but the Blazers’ scoring would end there as ECU pitcher Sarah Christian held UAB to just two hits. Megan McGrath picked up the other hit, a two-out double in the seventh.
Lannah Campbell got the start for UAB and tossed 2.2 innings of work, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Leigh Streetman came in to relieve Campbell and tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just one earned run on one hit.
UAB will be back in action on Tuesday as the Blazers begin a six-game home stand against Western Kentucky at 3 p.m.
East Carolina 7, UAB 1
For the second day in a row, senior Kristen McGrath gave UAB an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. With no on and two down, McGrath homered deep to center to replicate her first at-bat in yesterday’s opener off ECU’s Sarah Christian.
The Pirates would quickly respond in the bottom half with three runs. ECU’s leadoff batter and three-hole hitter both singled, and ECU catcher Abby Wynne followed with a 3-run home run to left-center to put the Pirates up 3-1 through the opening frame.
The Pirates added a run in the sixth when Briggs sent a home run to left to break Streetman’s streak of five-straight retired and cap the scoring, 7-1.
