UAB Softball Wins Magic City Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team defeated Samford and Birmingham-Southern on Sunday to clinch the 2006 Magic City Classic title for the fourth time in school history. The Blazers swept the final day of competition and have now won five of their last six games. UAB finishes the tournament with a 9-6 overall mark and had four players named to the all-tournament team.

"We are very excited to win both games today and did a great job putting the bat on the ball," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We were able to come up with some key hits today and pick up some big RBI's. Our opponents have scored first in every game this weekend but we remained confident and played well under pressure. The pitching staff did a great job of getting ground balls and not allowing walks. This weekend gives us a lot of confidence heading into conference play."

The final game of the tournament was against Birmingham-Southern for the tournament title. UAB needed two big innings late to down the Panthers.

BSC scored first in the third inning on a double steal attempted that failed but scored Grace Stokes from third. It would be the final inning the Panthers would threaten to score. In the game, BSC only had three hits and struck out six times.

UAB trailed 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning. With two outs and the top of the order due up, the Blazers unleashed the power. Lindsay Stanley drove a single to center field to reach safely at first. Chelsea McCall followed with an RBI triple down the right field line to score Stanley from first. Holly Krzan then cleared the bases with her third home run of the year down the left field line. All together UAB scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead.



The Blazers weren't finished at the plate and continued to expand their lead in the sixth inning. Sophomore Leigh Walker led off with a walk then advanced on a double by freshman Amanda Antonovich. Kayla Harris came through at the plate in game two with a two RBI double down the left field line to score both Walker and Antonovich. Harris eventually scored after Krzan walked with the bases loaded. In the inning, UAB added three more runs.

The Panthers had one final shot to come back from a 6-1 deficit but could not come through with a hit. The Blazers held on for the win while striking out two BSC batters in the final frame.

At the plate, Krzan went 1-for-1 with two walks and the three-run home run. McCall was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI while Antonovich was the only Blazers to have two hits in the game.

Sophomore Jennifer Nelson pitched seven complete innings and improving to 3-0. Nelson allowed one run and three hits in one of her best performances of the year.

For their performances during the weekend, Krzan was named tournament Most Valuable Players, while McCall, Stanley and Nelson all were named all-tournament.

The Blazers will continue non-conference play Tuesday against Troy in a doubleheader starting a 4 p.m. at George Ward Park. Complete coverage of UAB softball can be found at
