BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team split on the opening day of the 2006 Magic City Classic after falling to Birmingham-Southern, 6-3, in the nightcap at the BSC Softball Park. The Blazers fall to 7-6 on the year with the loss.
"Birmingham-Southern is a very good team," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We executed on defense in both games but gave up a couple of runs late. In both games today we had great opportunities to score. We have to start put hits together and scoring runs. Our goal today was to study our opponents and capitalize on their weakness tomorrow."
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Melissa Taunton to plate Grace Stokes.
The Blazers wasted little time in responding in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Kayla Harris gave the Blazers their first lead on a three-run home run over the left field fence with two outs. It was her first home run of the season and the first of her collegiate career.
BSC pulled within a run of the Blazers in the fourth inning after they scored one run on three hits. UAB slammed the down on the rally leaving two runners stranded on the bases.
Brittany Hodge came on in relief in the fifth inning for starter Kayla Harris. With two on and two outs, Hodge gave up a three-run home run to Jennifer Wellborn to left field to put the Panthers up 5-3.
UAB threatened in the home half of the fifth inning but could not chip away at the Panthers lead. BSC added an insurance run in the sixth and eventually held on for a 6-3 victory.
Six different Blazers recorded hits in the game but none bigger than the three-run home run by Harris. She went 1-for-1 in the game with a run scored and three RBI.
Hodge takes the loss in the circle after giving up three runs and three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Harris pitched 4.1 innings allowing six hits and three runs.
Wellborn led the way for the Panthers going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Melissa Taunton also had a big night going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Magic City Classic will continue Sunday at the BSC Softball Park. UAB will face Samford at noon and complete the tournament against the Panthers at 2 p.m. Complete coverage of the UAB softball program and found at www.uabsports.com.
