The UAB softball team dropped a 10-1 game to No. 18 Georgia on Sunday to close out play at the Bulldog Invitational.

ATHENS, Ga. – The UAB softball team (6-10) fell to No. 18 Georgia (16-2), 10-1, in five innings on Sunday to close competition at the 6th Annual Bulldog Invitational.
With the loss UAB finished the weekend 3-2 with wins over Western Carolina, St. John’s and No. 18 Georgia. The Blazers shutout all three opponents they defeated and picked up their first win over a ranked opponent this season by defeating Georgia, 8-0, on Saturday.
Megan McGrath finished with UAB’s lone RBI on the day with a solo home run to left field in the second inning for her second long ball of the weekend. Kristen McGrath, Anna Theriot and Danii Fernandez totaled UAB’s other three hits of the day.
Lannah Campbell got the start in the circle and re-entered and was tagged with the loss after tossing two innings of work allowing five earned runs on five hits. Freshman Cara Goodwin also threw 2.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits. Junior Heather Pearson extended her reached-base streak to 15 games with a walk in the third inning.

Megan McGrath put UAB on the board in the second inning with two outs. McGrath sent a deep home run to left field, her second of the weekend, to give UAB an early 1-0 lead. The second-inning scoring marked the second-straight game UAB has scored in the frame.
Georgia answered in its half with four runs. Kaylee Puailoa singled to begin the inning and she advanced to second and third on consecutive wild pitches from Lannah Campbell. Tina Iosefa drew a walk to put two Bulldogs on and Puailoa came home to score on an error from Ashley Johnson on a pickoff attempt at third.
Following back-to-back putouts, Georgia totaled three-straight hits to continue the frame. Samantha LaZear delivered a two-out double to score a run and Anna Swafford followed with a RBI-single. Paige Wilson tripled to bring home the fourth run of the inning and give Georgia a 4-1 advantage through two.
The Bulldogs added a run in the third with a run on one hit to increase their lead to 5-1. Alex Hugo began the inning with a single and Iosefa drove her in on a one-out, RBI-double off the right field wall to make the score 5-1.
Georgia would go on to hit four home runs over the final two innings to run away with a 10-1 defeat of UAB in five innings.
The Blazers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 4, at Mississippi State at 6 p.m.
