BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team (3-8) fell to No. 11 Alabama (13-3), 5-0, on Tuesday night at the UAB Softball Field.
“We came out flat and this is our field and we’ve got to get out here and protect it,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “We’re going to keep pushing. We’re going to work it out in practice and get ready to go this weekend.”
Alabama starter Leslie Jury tossed a complete-game shutout in the circle for the Crimson Tide, as UAB totaled six hits to drop its second home game of the season.
Crimson Tide leadoff hitter Haylie McCleney put Alabama on the board early with a home run to right field that gave them an early 1-0 lead. Molly Fichtner added two more runs in the third on an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the UAB sixth inning with Mary Warren on first, Megan McGrath sent a deep ball to center field that left the park, but it was ruled a single. The Blazers went on to strand two runners in that inning, as they stranded nine total for the game.
Alabama added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double and RBI single. Jury got the win in the circle for Alabama allowing six hits in seven innings, while Streetman was tagged with the loss for UAB. Lannah Campbell came in to relieve Streetman and threw 3.2 innings of work and allowed three hits and two earned runs.
