WOODSTOCK, Ga.--Behind pitcher Lauren Webster's career high 14 strikeouts, UAB defeated IUPUI, 3-0, on Sunday at the Kennesaw State Classic. In the final game of the weekend, the Blazers fell to UT Martin, 2-0.
"I felt that we came in and played some really solid ball," head coach Marla Townsend said. "We definitely improved as a team, but we have to continue to get better at the plate. We've had some really quality at-bats, but then we turn around and chase balls that are outside of the zone. I think that the more disciplined we become, the more successful we're going to be."
The Blazers are now 6-3 on the season, while IUPUI fell to 3-5 and UT Martin improved to 5-3.
"Defensively, we expect them to play solid, and when they don't, the error comes back to haunt us," Townsend continued. "We've seen it happen several times. I thought that the pitchers did an outstanding job this weekend, especially Lauren (Webster) getting a new career high in strikeouts. Leigh (Streetman) pitched an amazing game as well."
Up next, UAB opens its home slate, hosting SEC foe and defending NCAA champion Alabama on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT, at the UAB Softball Field. Follow @UABSoftball on Twitter for in-game updates.
"We came out and played hard, and we have a big game on Tuesday," Townsend said. "I think we're in a pretty good place."
