WACO, Texas – The UAB softball team (3-6) played its third extra-inning game in three days and dropped the final game of the Getterman Classic, 8-6, to Lipscomb (8-1) in eight innings.
"With the adversity that we have already faced nine games into our season - Kelly Britt's injury two innings into the start of the season and coming up short in four extra inning games - is going to help define the strengths of this team," head coach Marla Townsend said. "We welcome the pressures that playing a very competitive schedule hold. The ladies have a winning attitude and are embracing every opportunity to play the game they love."
Lipscomb struck first in its half of the third inning when Brianne Welch doubled to left field to lead off the inning. After she advanced to third on a sacrifice, Paige Neely sent her home on a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.
The Bisons added two more runs in the fourth on an illegal pitch and an error to make it a 3-0 game. UAB answered back in its opportunity of the fourth with two runs on no hits. Megan McGrath got on base in the second at-bat of the inning when she was hit by a pitch, and Davis also advanced on a hit by pitch. Kristen McGrath and Mary Warren both walked to score Danii Fernandez who was in to pinch run, and also score Davis.
Lipscomb answered back in the fifth with two more runs when Kristen Sturdivant lifted a 2-run HR to left field. The Blazers would answer back to plate three runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Amy Dennis got things going with a single and Megan McGrath followed two batters later with a double down the right field line to set the table for the middle of the order. Following a Hayley Davis strikeout, Kristen McGrath lifted a deep ball to left-center field to tie the game at 5-5.
Lipscomb tacked on three runs in the eighth when Gracey Aguirre sent a home run to left to put Lipscomb up 7-5. The Bisons added one more run on a pinch-hit single over Dennis at third base from Haley Elliot to cap the scoring for Lipscomb in the eighth.
Pearson sent a single to left for an RBI and score the Blazers’ sixth and final run of the game to cap the eight-inning contest.
The Blazers will be back in action Wednesday when they host South Alabama at 4 p.m. in the home opener.
