WACO, Texas – The UAB softball team (3-5) used a six-inning, 8-0 defeat of Drake, and a nine-inning, 6-1 win over Iowa, to rebound and pick up two victories at the Getterman Classic on Saturday.
The Blazers earned their first run-rule victory of the season with an 8-0 win over the Drake Bulldogs in six innings at Getterman Stadium, and made the short trip to the Southwestern Region Little League Complex for a game immediately following in which they topped the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 6-1 thriller in nine innings.
“We’re where we want to be,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “Obviously we’d like to have a few more wins but we’re proud of the way we’ve been relentless and continued to fight back. I feel that our pitchers are doing a good job of keeping it low scoring when our bats are struggling. Our bats have come alive over the past two games.”
In UAB’s first game of the day against Drake, UAB struck first in the second with two runs on four hits. Senior Kristen McGrath doubled to left field to get things started for UAB and freshman Mary Warren followed with an RBI single. Following a single from sophomore Ashley Johnson, sophomore Caitlin Attfield doubled to left field for an RBI to score freshman Danii Fernandez who was in to pinch run for Warren.
Following an unearned run in the fourth for UAB to make the score 3-0, the Blazers tacked on four runs in the fifth to break open the scoring frame. Warren added the Blazers’ first run of the fifth when she singled through the right side to score junior Heather Pearson. Johnson followed with an RBI via being hit by a pitch and Attfield was also hit by a pitch to add a UAB run. Junior Amy Dennis added the inning’s fourth run on a single through the left side to score Warren.
With the score 7-0 heading to the sixth, UAB put the game away when Kristen McGrath doubled to right-center field to score freshman JoJo Fallen. Attfield finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Kristen McGrath finished 2-for-4 and Warren 2-for-2, who had two RBI. Senior Leigh Streetman tossed the full six innings in the circle for UAB and allowed just two hits, three walks and struck out five Drake batters.
In game two vs. Iowa, UAB played its fourth extra-inning game of 2014 and second nine-inning game in as many days.
Iowa got on the board first in the third inning on an RBI single up the middle from Alyssa Navarro. The run would stand as the Hawkeyes’ lone one of the day as Iowa totaled nine hits.
Warren answered for UAB in the bottom of the fifth when she sent her first-career home run to right field to tie the game at 1-1. From there the teams played to a 1-1 tie all the way up until the ninth inning when the Blazers sealed the deal with a five-run ninth to claim the 6-1 win.
Warren got things going in the ninth on a single to center field that scored two UAB go-ahead runs. But the Blazers weren’t done there. With two outs and a new Iowa pitcher in the circle in the ninth, Attfield sent a shot deep to center field for her first-career home run to score three and cap the scoring for the Blazers.
Warren finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Attfield went 2-for-5 with two hits, one run and three RBI. Senior Lannah Campbell got the start and threw 6.1 innings of solid work in the circle, allowing just one run, unearned, on nine hits and six strikeouts. Streetman (3-2) came in to relieve Campbell and threw 2.2 innings of shutdown work to strike out four Hawkeyes and not allow a hit.
“The competition we’re playing, that’s what we want,” Townsend said. “We want to see where we’re at right now and obviously our best ball is yet to come, but we’re playing together as a team and the girls are staying up and we’re excited to get back on the field tomorrow.”
The Blazers will wrap up competition at the Getterman Classic on Sunday morning with a 9 a.m. CT game against Lipscomb from the Little League Complex.
