HONOLULU ---- Senior Lauren Webster threw a one-hitter and Chandler Orr hit a homerun as UAB defeated Saint Mary's, 5-0, to cap off a successful second day of action at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. Earlier in the day, the Blazers downed Ole Miss, 5-3.
In the first game of the second day, the Blazers scored five runs off seven hits and had no errors as the Blazers came back from a one-run deficit in the third inning.
Kristen McGrath had three RBIs for the game, including the first score of the game, which occurred in the first inning. Ole Miss' Allison Brown then homered in the bottom of the first to tie the score, but the Blazers wouldn't let the tie hold for long. In the top of the second inning, senior Anna Kimbrell sent a rocket over the left field fence for her first homerun of the season.
The Rebels (1-2) scored a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a double to center field and a bases loaded walk.
UAB tied the score in the top of the fifth, as freshman Caitlin Attfield reached off a bunt single and then utilized her speed to steal bases on two different occasions before advancing to home on a throwing error by Ole Miss' catcher Natalie Martinez.
In the seventh inning, Hayley Davis reached by a single to left field, and was sent home when McGrath blasted the ball out of the stadium. In the circle, Streetman struck out two of her five to end the game and give UAB its second win of the season.
UAB 5, Saint Mary's 0
Both the Blazers and the Gaels went scoreless for five full innings before UAB's offense kicked into high gear in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Senior Whitney Fletcher reached base with a single to right center, and was advanced by a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Caitlin Attfield. Fletcher advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and Kristen McGrath came up to the plate and singled to bring in the first UAB run.
Senior Kate Armstrong singled to the left side before junior Megan McGrath reached on a fielding error by the Saint Mary's second baseman, and advanced to second while Armstrong scored, followed by senior Hailey Glynn, who came in to pinch run for McGrath. Orr sealed the deal with a two-run homer on the next play.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Webster struck out the first Gael batter, pitcher Sarah Lira. Megan Smith then grounded out to shortstop, and the final Saint Mary's batter struck out looking. Webster struck out 13 en route to the complete game.
The Blazers await their next opponent in the Paradise Softball Classic, which will be contested on Saturday. Follow @UABSoftball on Twitter for in-game updates.
