MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 21 UAB softball team fell to McNeese State, 5-3, in eight innings on Friday at Jaguar Field in the South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational.

UAB opened the scoring frame early in the contest in the bottom of the first when Kristen McGrath singled down the left field line to score Amy Dennis. That was the only run scored until the fifth inning when McNeese State’s Alanna DiVittorio sent a home run over the left field wall.

After seven innings of play the Blazers and Cowgirls remained tied at seven, to enforce the international tiebreaker rule with a runner being placed on second prior to the start of the inning.

McNeese State totaled four runs and four hits in its half of the eighth to lead UAB 5-1. The Blazers put their second run on the board when Megan McGrath singled through the right side to score Amy Dennis. Hayley Davis backed that up with a single to right field which scored Heather Pearson. Mary Warren followed with a groundout to the pitcher and JoJo Fallen struck out to end the game.

Senior Leigh Streetman tossed six innings of work and struck out nine and allowed just one run on four hits. Freshman Cara Goodwin was tabbed with the loss as she tossed an inning of work and allowed two runs and three walks on no hits. Lannah Campbell also tossed an inning and gave up four hits and allowed two runs.

Caitlin Attfield finished 3-for-4 at the plate for UAB and Amy Dennis finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a hit. Kristen McGrath picked up an RBI, as did Megan McGrath and Davis, to lead the offense for the Blazers.

UAB will be back in action from the South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational Saturday with two games. The Blazers will face Austin Peay at 11:15 a.m. and Syracuse at 3:45 p.m. to close the tournament.
