Senior Lannah Campbell got the start for UAB in the circle Thursday night to open the season against South Alabama.

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama pitcher Farish Beard tossed a five-inning shutout and struck out 10 Blazers as the No. 21 UAB softball team dropped its season-opener to No. 20 South Alabama, 8-0, at Jaguar Field Thursday night.
The Blazers totaled just one hit, a single by Caitlin Attfield up the middle in UAB’s half of the third inning. The Jaguars picked up eight runs on seven hits and had two three-run innings to top UAB in five innings.
South Alabama scored first in the first inning on a UAB error, and backed that up with back-to-back three-run innings. The Jaguars picked up three hits to score three runs in the bottom of the second, and got a three-run home run from Chloe Rathburn in the third to make the score 7-0 heading to the fourth.
South Alabama added the final run of the game in the fourth inning on a triple to right field from Stephanie Pilkington. Beard got the win for the Jaguars, tossing five innings with 10 strikeouts, while UAB’s Lannah Campbell tossed three innings of work allowing seven earned runs on six hits.
The Blazers will be back in action Friday morning at 11 a.m. as they face McNeese State in UAB’s only game of the day at the South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational.
