Women's Soccer Opens C-USA Schedule On Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB women's soccer team returns to West Campus Field for the first time in three weeks to open the Conference USA schedule. The Blazers will host Southern Miss on Friday at 7 p.m. CT, and then will take on No. 6 UCF on Sunday at Noon CT.

Last week, UAB (1-7) hit the road to close out its non-conference slate at Stetson and Florida Atlantic. The Blazers earned their first win of the season against Stetson, 2-1. Sophomore Johanna Liney started things off for the Blazers with a goal in the 25th minute. Liney leads the team in goals scored and points with three and seven, respectively. Freshman Ashley Naumoffscored the first goal of her career and the game-winner in the 56th minute.

UAB Falls To Southern Miss 2-1 In Overtime
The UAB women's soccer team took a 1-1 draw against Conference USA opponent Southern Miss into overtime, but the Blazers fell 2-1 in the 97th minute of play.

On Sunday, UAB traveled to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on Florida Atlantic. After falling behind 3-0, the squad mounted a comeback with a trio of Blazers hitting the back of the net. Naumoff scored her second goal of the season in the 76th minute, and fellow freshman Isabel Shanteau and senior Emma Jane Smithfollowed in the 82nd and 83rd minutes. Ultimately, the squad was unable to keep FAU's Claire Emslie from scoring the Owls' fourth and final goal with two minutes to go, which sealed the final score at 4-3.

The Southern Miss soccer squad closed out the non-conference schedule with a 2-0 shutout of Arkansas State last week to improve to a record of 3-3-1. Junior forward Danica Roberts leads the Golden Eagles with six points (3g), and has recorded one game-winning goal. Senior midfielder Jordan Wagner sports a team-high three assists.

The No. 6 UCF Knights enter the weekend sporting a 6-1-1 record. Last week, the Knights hosted North Florida, and came out with a 3-1 victory. Senior forward Nicolette Radovcic leads the team with a total of 11 points (5g, 1a), and three game winning goals. Senior Class Award nominee Tishia Jewell leads the team with three assists. Before traveling to Birmingham, the Knights will open the conference schedule at Memphis on Friday.

Next week, the Blazers remain at West Campus Field to host conference foes Marshall and East Carolina on Friday, Sept 28 at 7 p.m. CT and Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. CT, respectively.
