BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team is set to open its 2014 season on Friday against South Alabama in Mobile at 7 p.m. CT.
Friday night's contest marks the start of not only the season, but also a seven-game road swing to begin the 2014 slate. Following the first seven matches of the year, UAB will return home on Sept. 19 in the first of six matches to be played at West Campus Field.
UAB is coming off an 11-win season in 2013 in which the Blazers advanced to the Conference USA tournament for the first time since the 2009 season.
Live stats will be available at USAJaguars.com and live updates will be posted to the UAB women's soccer Twitter page in the link above.
The Series Against South Alabama
UAB holds a 2-0 advantage in the series, as the Blazers and Jaguars met in 2003 and again last season. The two teams have never met in Mobile, as Friday's contest will be the first in the Port City.
Both UAB and South Alabama have similar program history, in that the Jags began play in 1994, while the Green and Gold debuted in 1996. Both programs have two all-time NCAA tournament appearances, with the Jaguars' last appearance coming last season.
Charlotte was tabbed as the preseason coaches' favorite to win the 2014 championship, while North Texas, Rice, FIU and UTEP round out the top five in front of the Blazers. North Texas' Rachel Holden was selected as the preseason offensive player of the year, while Charlotte's Monica Trickett earned preseason defensive player of the year honors.
Season Openers On The Road
Friday's contest marks the fourth-straight season UAB will have opened on the road, dating back to 2011 when the Blazers took on Oklahoma in Norman. In 2012, they faced Oregon State in Corvallis and played Vanderbilt in Nashville in 2013.
