Hello Blazer Fans!!!!
This past weekend the UAB women's soccer team traveled to the state of Oregon to take on the Oregon State Beavers and the Oregon Ducks. Groggy and half asleep, our trip began on Thursday at 4:45 a.m. After fifteen hours of traveling we finally arrived in Corvallis, Oregon. Since we had been confined to a plane for most of the day, it was only right to get our legs moving again, so once we arrived at Oregon State we practiced immediately. We had a good possession oriented practice that consisted of moving the ball fast and focusing on taking no more than two touches. After practice was over you could tell everyone was excited and ready to take on a very talented Oregon State team.
We began Friday with an incredible team breakfast at the hotel. Unlike the morning before, everyone woke up hyped and excited for game day. From there we had a bit of down time for people to either get treatments if they were injured or to do some homework. Yes, unfortunately we did have to miss the second day of classes; many of us already have some assignments to make up.
On Friday night we played OSU. It was their home opener on a brand new field that had never been played on, and it was definitely the nicest grass field we have ever seen. Despite a rowdy crowd, we started off strong in the first half controlling the game and possessing the ball well. OSU definitely didn't know what hit them. They came out physical, but we adjusted quickly. We had several great opportunities to score, but we just couldn't seem to find the back of the net. The second half gave us a little more trouble, and we let them knick a goal in with just three minutes left in the game. Regardless of a negative result on the scoreboard, we were very satisfied with our play, especially since this was our first regular season game. We executed much of what we work on at practice to a "T", and I was impressed that we didn't back down against such a highly ranked opponent.
Everyone seemed to be in good spirits the next morning despite losing the night before. We spent the day traveling to Eugene and resting our legs. On the ride we had a 90's throwback music session in Coach Kate's van. We were shocked that many of our freshmen didn't know some of the songs! For Example, Kennedy Depperschmidt didn't recognize "Meet Virginia" by Train! Needless to say, we had a good time in the vans.
It was definitely an awesome experience to travel across the country to play against two extremely successful teams. The team had a fun time, and we are fortunate for such a rare opportunity. We may not have gotten 2 W's on the scoreboard, but we definitely grew as a team both on and off the field.
This coming Friday is our Alumni game and then on Sunday afternoon at 1pm we take on the University of Alabama. Sunday's game will be a great opportunity to see your favorite UAB Blazers take it to Alabama in our first home match of the 2012 season!!! Please come out and support, as this will be one of the biggest games of the season!!!
Up The Blazers!
