HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The UAB women's soccer team earned a 3-0 Conference USA victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field. The match marked the regular season finale for both squads.
The Blazers concluded their regular season schedule with a record of 9-7-2 overall and a 5-3-1 mark in conference games. The Thundering Herd finished the year with a 4-13-1 overall record that included a 1-7-1 mark in league play.
UAB got its first score of the game in the fifth minute when senior Sally Palmer drilled home her eighth goal of the season off of a corner kick by sophomore Toni Gockel.
After holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Blazers extended their lead to 2-0 when freshman Justine Hartigan put one in the back of the net during the 68th minute of the contest. The goal marked Hartigan's fourth of the year.
UAB got an extra insurance goal in the 85th minute when freshman Janet Self recorded the first goal of her collegiate career to give UAB the 3-0 win over the Thundering Herd.
The Blazers had a distinct 18-8 advantage in shots over Marshall, including a 10-3 lead in shots on goal. Palmer and Hartigan led UAB with four shots apiece. Senior Jill Porto added three and Self contributed two.
The Thundering Herd was paced by Marisa Leconte with three shots, including one on goal. Molly Snead took two shots and three others added one shot each to Marshall's total.
Redshirt freshman Kate Blankenship earned her ninth win in goal for the Blazers by nabbing three saves while preserving the shutout. Marshall's Liz Orton tallied seven saves and allowed three goals while receiving the loss in goal for the Thundering Herd.
The Blazers will now turn their attention toward the upcoming Conference USA tournament Nov. 7-11 in El Paso, Texas.
