CONWAY, S.C. ----- The UAB's women's soccer team (6-1-0) defeated Coastal Carolina (3-3-1) by a score of 3-1 on Friday night. The Blazers scored two goals in the final five minutes to take the win over the Chanticleers.
The Blazers were on the board first with a goal from Paige Hanks at the 14:01 mark. Hanks hit the net from 21 yards out to score her fourth goal of the season.
The Chanticleers countered six minutes later with a goal from Fia Jonsson at 20:50 to tie it up at 1-1 going into halftime. Both teams battled out of the half, but strong defense kept either team from adding another score.
It wasn't until the 86th minute that the scoring draught was broken when UAB's Amy Harrison notched her second goal of the season. Harrison had her first attempt blocked, but stayed with it and put the rebound in the back of the net to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.
Shortly after that, Kasey Johnson tacked on another goal to secure the win for the Green and Gold. Johnson netted the goal off of a cross from teammate Abby Phillips who tallied the assist.
UAB will remain on the road as it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a matchup with in-state rival Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. CT.
