MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The UAB women's soccer team topped Middle Tennessee State, 3-1, in an exhibition contest Saturday evening at Blue Raider Field. The game was called in the 61st minute due to inclement weather.

The Blazers stuck first when sophomore Danya Barsalona scored in the eighth minute of the match to put UAB up, 1-0. Middle Tennessee responded with a goal of its own by Kelly Downs, with an assist by Kaley Forrest, to tie the game at one-all just before the 20 minute mark.

UAB went back on top when senior Jill Porto tallied her fifth goal of the 2007 exhibition season during the 29th minute to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Blazers entering halftime.

A second goal by Barsalona in the 56th minute of the match put the Blazers up 3-1 before the game was initially delayed because of lightening in the area. After a 23-minute delay, the game was suspended and the victory was granted to UAB.

"I was very happy with our organization tonight," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We had good organization from every end, both defensively and on the attack.

"Just about everybody got to play tonight and we saw good things from each player. This was another test to prepare us for the upcoming season and we feel good about it."

Overall, the Blazers led in shots, 10-7, including seven shots on goal for UAB compared to three for Middle Tennessee. The Blazers also had a 4-0 advantage over the Blue Raiders in corner kicks.

Barsalona led UAB on the offensive side with two goals on five shots, while Porto scored one goal on two shots on the night. Sophomore Danielle Blair added two shots, including one shot on goal, and freshman Allysha Chapman tallied one shot.

For the Blue Raiders, Holly Grogan led with three shots, followed by Down with two and Forrest and Vanessa Mueggler with one shot each.

Freshman Kate Blankenship earned the win in goal for the Blazers by nabbing a pair of saves and allowing one goal during the match. Erynn Murray received the loss for the Blue Raiders, giving up two goals and tallying three saves in 45 minutes in goal.

UAB opens its regular season schedule at the LQ Cup tournament in Macon, Ga. on Aug. 31 against host-school Mercer, followed by a Sept. 2 meeting with Georgia State.
