The 36-hole tournament, which began in 1999, will again be held at the par 72, 5,932-yard and will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17 when the players will compete over 36 holes. The final 18-hole round will tee off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
Joining the Blazers, the tournament features 15 teams from six different states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) including four of the six all-time tournament champions: Eastern Kentucky (2011), Elon (2001), Tennessee Tech (1999, `00) and Western Carolina (2002, `03, `04, `05, `06, `08, `09). Western Carolina's Sofie Kvarnstrom returns to the field as the defending individual medalist.
UAB returns all five starters from last year's team that finished 12th at this tournament, including junior Caitlin Watts who finished 21st on the opening weekend in 2011. Senior Jaime Ritter claimed the individual title at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in 2010 with a score of 140 (69-71).
Kvarnstrom and Ritter will be vying to join the only two previous golfers to win multiple Great Smokies Intercollegiate championships. Former Western Carolina Catamounts Brandy Andersen and Ashley Hovda won in 2002 and 2003, and 2004 and 2005, respectively.
Watts captured the lone individual title for the Blazers last season, coming away with the victory at the Belmont Invitational with a score of 149 (74-75).
