GULF SHORES, Ala. – The UAB women’s golf team concluded play at the 2012 Fall Beach Blast on Tuesday with a third-place finish in the event.
Playing at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club, the Blazers finished six strokes behind second-place Sam Houston State (627/+51), while Southern Miss took the No. 1 spot with a 37-over 613 team score.
“I am pleased with the way we competed this week,” said head coach Kim Wilcox. “A third-place finish in an event like this is a great way to conclude the fall portion of our schedule and gives us plenty to build on as we head to the spring.”
Individually, UAB sophomore Holly Robinson shot a team-best 13-over 157 to finish in a three-way tie for eighth place. Teammate and Blazer sophomore Margaret Yeh also had a strong two rounds with her 12th-place showing after shooting a 15-over 159.
Junior Caitlin Watts finished tied at No. 16 with her 16-over 160, while senior Lindsey Gipson shot a 17-over 161 to claim a 23rd-place finish. Meanwhile, senior Jaime Ritter (+19/163) and freshman Jessica Rouillard (+20/164) rounded out the Blazer effort in 28th and 31st place, respectively.
Sam Houston State’s Shelby Hardy tallied a four-over 148 to take medalist honors, while Juliana Herrera (+5/149) and Vicky Correa (+7/151) of Southern Miss were second and third.
The Fall Beach Blast is the final event of the fall season for the Blazers. UAB begins the spring on Feb. 25-26 at the USA Women’s Invitational in Mobile, Ala.
