GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Led by Holly Robinson's one-over par, 73, UAB's women's golf team stands in ninth place following first-round action at the 2014 Conference USA Championship on Monday.
The Blazers fired a team total 22-over par, 310 through the first 18 holes at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club and trail eighth-place Southern Miss by only two strokes entering Tuesday's second round. Tulane, which is ranked No. 34 in the latest Golfstat.com rankings, leads the field after shooting a 281 (-7) as a team.
"I was very happy to see Holly playing to her potential today," head coach Kim Wilcox said. "She has been practicing and working hard all year, so it was good to see her finally put it all together at the Conference USA Tournament. We are excited about where we are at and are looking forward to getting back out here tomorrow."
Despite a double-bogey on the first hole, Robinson rebounded and totaled a team-high four birdies on the day. The Northern Ireland native is currently in a tie for 10th place heading into the second round.
Blazer senior Caitlin Watts finished with a three-over par, 75 in Monday's opening round for the second-best finish on the team. Watts fired a three-over on the front nine, but came back to shoot an even par on the final nine holes.
The Blazers will begin play around 9:10 a.m. CT on Tuesday and will be paired with Southern Miss and North Texas. Fans can follow live stats by clicking here.
