MOBILE, Ala. ----- The UAB women’s golf team opened the USA Women’s Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama with a team score of 325 on a day that was shortened by rain.

The women’s golf team was supposed to play36-holes today, but rain postponed the start of the event several hours. Once play began, Jessica Rouillard led the way for the Blazers carding an opening round score of eight-over par 80. She was able to avoid any big mistakes, making nine bogeys and one birdie on her round.

Jaime Ritter and Holly Robinson each fired rounds of nine-over 81. Ritter’s round was split evenly with pars and bogeys while Robinson’s round featured a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole.

After a rough start to the tournament, Caitlin Watts parred six consecutive holes on her back nine to finish the day with an 83 (+11). Margaret Yeh rounded out the scoring for the Blazers with an 89 (+17).

As a team, the Blazers finished with a team score of 325 (+37) which puts them in a tie for ninth place. South Alabama leads the tournament after an opening round of 306 (+18). Louisiana Monroe and Arkansas-Little Rock are in a tie for second place at 322 (+22).

“The girls hit the ball pretty well from tee to green but we struggled to make the transition from the greens we practice on to the greens we played on today,” said head coach Kim Wilcox. “It’s our first tournament of the spring and I expect we’ll play better tomorrow.”

Arkansas-Little Rock’s Emelie Westrup sits atop the individual leaderboard after a first round score of one-over par 73. Three golfers are tied for second place at two-over par.

Final round play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com.
