BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB bowling team opens the 2013-14 season at the Crusader Classic in Valparaiso, Ind. The tournament will run from Friday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 10.
It will be the first of two tournaments for the Blazers in November. The Crusader Classic will feature 14 teams, including nine that are ranked in the top-20.
The teams are No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 3 Central Missouri, No. 4 Arkansas State, No. 6 Sam Houston State, No. 8 UW-Whitewater, No. 9 Stephen F. Austin, No. 14 Valparaiso, No. 19 Prairie View A&M and Tulane.
UAB returns top scorers Marissa Ferreira and Leah Walker from last year’s team. Ferreira averaged 182.56 and Walker 176.07 last season. The team will also look to returners Cybil Long, Jennafer Mellott, Qituwrah King and Marisa DiPonio to contribute.
Head coach Michelle Crews will have added depth to the team with freshmen Lauren Douglas and Bailey James. Douglas was a three-time state and regional champion and James won her region in 2013.
Action on Friday will begin at 9:50 a.m. with the teams competing in six four-game baker matches. Saturday will start at 8:30 a.m. and features six traditional team matches. Play on Sunday will also begin at 8:30 a.m., starting with a single best-of-seven baker match then two rounds of bracket play.
