SMYRNA, Tenn. -- Marissa Ferreira tied for 17th out of 130 individual competitors over the weekend as the UAB bowling team wrapped up its inaugural season at Vanderbilt's Columbia 300 Music City Classic.

UAB closed the tournament in 19th place among 20 teams at the Smyrna Bowling Center. The tournament featured nine of the top 10 teams in the country and 15 of the top 20.

Nebraska defeated top-ranked Arkansas State, 4-3, in the tournament's championship match Sunday. Fairleigh Dickinson finished in third place, followed by Central Missouri in fourth.

The Blazers won two of their three matches Sunday as the tournament concluded with bracket-style competition. Both wins, including a come-from-behind victory in the final match of the tournament, came over Tulane. UAB rallied from a 3-0 deficit against the Green Wave to win the next four games in a row and clinch 19th place.

UAB found itself in Sunday's bottom bracket to determine spots 17 through 20 after a tough first two days against the strong field. The Blazers went 1-5 in four-game Baker matches on Friday and 1-5 in traditional matches on Saturday.

In Saturday's action, Ferreira bowled a six-game average of 194.7, including the Blazers' highest two games of the tournament at 233 and 224. Her 17th place finish with 1,168 total pins was just 25 pins out of the top 10.

Leah Walker was the next highest finisher for the Blazers in 48th place with an average of 175.8, while Jennafer Mellott checked in at 55th with an average of 168.5. Jamie Cowden (151.7) in 66th and Qituwrah King (132.2) in 77th rounded out the Blazer bowlers.

Nebraska's Kristi Mickelson won the individual competition with a six-game average of 223, more than 12 pins per game ahead of second-place Nicole Trudell from Sacred Heart.

The tournament was the last of eight events on UAB's schedule in its first year of competition. The Blazers finished the campaign with two tournament titles, winning the Elizabeth City State Beach Open in November and the South Carolina State Bulldog Roundup in February.
