BESSEMER, Ala. -- The UAB bowling team posted a match victory over the sixth-ranked team in the country to highlight its weekend at the Holiday Collegiate Classic at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center.
The Blazers closed the tournament with a record of 2-8 over the three days and finished ninth in the the field of nine teams.
The Blazers' victory over No. 6 Central Missouri came Friday in the four-game Baker matches on the tournament's opening day. It was a good way to close the day for the Blazers, which lost to third-ranked Valparaiso, Southern and Alabama State in their previous three matches.
On Saturday, UAB went 1-4 in traditional match play with all four losses coming to ranked teams. The Blazers posted a victory over Tulane but suffered a pair of losses to No. 7 Vanderbilt and one loss each to No. 4 Arkansas State and No. 17 Alabama A&M.
Jamie Cowden was UAB's top individual performer in the traditional matches, posting an average of 188.0 to finish in 22nd place among 52 competitors. Leah Walker averaged 179.8 to finish in 28th, followed by Jennafer Mellott (175.0) in 32nd, Marissa Ferreira (171.6) in 33rd and Qituwrah King (155.4) in 40th.
UAB closed the weekend with bracket play on Sunday. The Blazers faced just one opponent in the best-of-seven Baker format, falling to Southern in six games.
The Blazers have just one event remaining on their regular-season schedule, a trip to Nashville, Tenn., Match 16-18 for the Music City Classic.
