SUMTER, S.C. -- The UAB bowling team closed out its second tournament victory of the season Sunday at South Carolina State's Bulldog Roundup.

The Blazers also had the top two finishers with Jamie Cowden winning the individual competition and Marissa Ferreira coming in second.

The Blazers, which entered the second day in first place and maintained the top spot, finished with a total pinfall of 7,405 over 10 matches for the weekend. Fayetteville State finished in second place at 7,136, followed by South Carolina State in third at 6,520 and Shaw in fourth at 5,025.

Sunday's action featured three total-pinfall Baker matches and two traditional matches with the Blazers posting a 4-1 record to finish with a combined 8-2 record over the two-day event -- their best record at a tournament so far.

The Blazers posted victories in Baker matches over South Carolina State (727-654) and Shaw (672-439), while suffering their lone defeat by a narrow margin to Fayetteville State (644-642).

In the traditional matches, the Blazers picked up wins over South Carolina State (833-798) and Shaw (815-521).

In five traditional matches over the two days, Cowden racked up 895 pins (179 per game) to beat out her teammate for the top spot by just four pins. Ferreira finished with a total of 891 (178.2 per game).

The Blazers also had two other top 10 finishers with Leah Walker in sixth at 856 pins (171.2 per game) and Jennafer Mellott in eighth at 844 (168.8 per game).

Mellott posted the Blazers' highest single-game score of the day and third-highest of the tournament with a 208 against South Carolina State. Only Ferreira's 245 and Cowden's 209 on Saturday were higher.

UAB's Qituwrah King finished in 14th place with a score of 692 (138.4 per game).

The Blazers now have two tournament victories under their belt in their inaugural season of intercollegiate competition, having also won back in November at Elizabeth City State's Beach Open.

UAB returns to action Feb. 24-25 with a nearby event in Bessemer, Ala., at the Holiday Classic. It is one of two regular-season tournaments remaining on this year's schedule.
