UAB Bowling First After Day 1 In South Carolina

SUMTER, S.C. -- The UAB bowling team is in first place after day one at South Carolina State's Bulldog Roundup, and the Blazers boast the top three individual bowlers following Saturday's action on the tournament's opening day.

UAB recorded a total pinfall of 3,716 on Saturday to lead second-place Fayetteville State (3,593) by 123 pins. South Carolina State is in third place at 3,311, while Shaw rounds out the four-team field at 2,555. The tournament concludes Sunday.

Saturday's action started with three traditional games as UAB swept the other three teams in the field, downing South Carolina State (821-661), Fayetteville State (856-825) and Shaw (853-576).

UAB's Jamie Cowden led all bowlers in the traditional format with a three-game total of 569. Fellow Blazer Marissa Ferreira was just one pin behind in second place at 568, and teammate Leah Walker had the third-best score at 540 as UAB owned the top three spots.

Jennafer Mellott (460) and Qituwrah King (393) rounded out the UAB lineup by finishing the traditional games in 10th and 12th place, respecively.

Saturday's action also included a pair of total-pinfall Baker matches. UAB lost its first Baker match, 644-550, to South Carolina State, but rebounded for a 636-564 win over Fayetteville State to finish the opening day with a 4-1 overall record.

The tournament will wrap up on Sunday with three best-of-seven Baker matches and two more traditional matches.
