BOWIE, Md. ---- The UAB bowling team took home fourth place honors in the 14-team field at Frederick E. Underwood Lady Bulldog Classic hosted by Bowie State over the weekend.
In the best of seven bracket play on Sunday, Sam Houston defeated Bethune-Cookman, Chowan and North Carolina A&T to earn the tournament crown.
Overall the Blazers finished fourth, posting a record of 8-2 for the tournament.
In bracket play on Sunday, UAB fell to North Carolina A&T, 844-696, defeated North Carolina Central, 774-657, before dropping its tournament finale in the third round to Bethune-Cookman, 810-720.
Marisa DiPonio led the charge for the Blazers, finished with the fourth highest pin fall total in the tournament. DiPonio knocked down a total of 1,060 pins over the course of five games for an average pin fall score of 212. She trailed only Atoya Leatherbury of Morgan State (221.4), Kimi Davidson of Sam Houston State (220.2) and Rachel Moore of Bethune-Cookman (213.6).
Joining DiPonio with top-25 finishes in the tournament, included Jamie Cowden, who placed 13th with a pin fall average of 188.2, Ali Long finished 16th (187.0) and Marissa Ferriera placed 25th (173.8).
The Blazers are off until Feb. 16th when they take part in the Hoosier Classic held in Indianapolis, Ind., hosted by Marian University.
